novelist Choo Yangsze, whose debut; “The Ghost Bride”
arrived on shelves in August and is already causing a buzz in
the literary world, making Malaysians proud. Born in Malaysia
to a diplomat father, Choo spent her childhood travelling the
world before pursuing Social Studies at Harvard University and
settling in the United States. She is married with two children.
When did you start writing and why?
The earliest thing I ever wrote was a diary. I think I was about six and it’s full of
misspellings. I loved animals when I was a child and there are pages and pages
devoted to things like “the dog next door likes raisins!” (raisins can be harmful to
dogs).
What were your earliest ambitions?
I wanted to be a vet and a cartoonist (I loved Lat when I was growing up).
Did the experience of being a diplomat’s daughter have a big impact on you
growing up?
My dad’s job meant that we moved every few years to a different country, such as
