opens up a whole new perspective
to a healthy lifestyle away from the
demands of everyday life. Yoga helps
you to keep in sync with yourself!
Often, we define ourselves by the
things we do. We place importance
on everyone else and everything else that
we tend to forget about ourselves. The
effects these things have on our mind,
body and spirit define us and shift with
our moods and conditions. In reality, this
does not reflect our real self. Between work
and home, the demands and stresses, we
lose touch with our inner selves, the core
essence with which we are born. We need
to strip away these emotions, sensations
and conditions in order to unravel our true
selves.
Through practising yoga, we are able to
enjoy such exclusive moments by striking
a harmony between the mind, body and
breath. Ancient India’s yoga originated

with the correct breathing techniques
called pranayama and meditation to
improve health and foster happiness for a
wholesome being.
Yoga helps us to review the events that
led to the onset of negative feelings such as
anxiety, fear and stress, and works towards
releasing their grip on the nervous system.
This is done through yoga postures,
breathing techniques and/or meditation.
Although yoga generally focuses on
postures, breathing and meditation, it also
places importance on love, compassion,
knowledge and justice as paths towards a
union.
Yoga is not about self-absorption. It
is about being in harmony with oneself.
It is intrinsic and teaches us to become
more in tune with what is important in
our life. Yoga does not discriminate and
is based on one of the most difficult yet
liberating principles of letting go of the
ego and accepting that all are born equal.
Its non-competitive spirit emphasises
that no one is better than the other, with
everyone doing their best. We regain
control of ourselves by practising yoga.
It helps to cut through layers of varying
identities that arise in response to our
actions, experiences and feelings. It calms
the frenzy, clears the clutter and swings us
right back in sync with our real selves once
again.
Yoga exudes a sense of calmness, a
sense of peace. This mind-body practice
is known to reduce stress, lower blood
pressure and improve heart function. It is
with a view to attain a state of permanent
peace. It aims to address any imbalance in
the system that causes issues. Yoga means
“union’ in Sanskrit, hence the union of the
mind, body and spirit. It is a unison with
self.
It is much more than the bending and
twisting of our body into odd shapes.
It nurtures our body, mind and breath.
Yoga is about creating a balanced mental
and spiritual well being through physical
activities that develop strength, flexibility
and mobility. This can be achieved
through yoga postures known as asana;
each different posture having a specific
physical benefit. These postures, combined
