Friday Feeling
Take advantage of the fact that many
people leave early on a Friday, do the
same yourself. Your clients and contacts
will not be around, so force yourself out of
the office early and make an effort to plan
your evening the week before – this will
serve as an incentive to start the weekend
early.
Pick a Place
Make a list of all the places in Malaysia
that you haven’t seen, everything from
Redang Island to the National Mosque in
Shah Alam. Stick this list somewhere you
can see it, and plan to tick one off each
month, planning a weekend trip or even a
day outing once every four weeks.
Join a Club
There are many social clubs or sport
organisations to get involved with, and you
will easily find one that meets close to your
home or office. Make a commitment to a
weekly or monthly activity; the obligation
to attend will be a sure driver to stop you
working late and a regular outing can be
a great way to let off steam in a stressful
week.
Go Out for Lunch
It is often too tempting to eat lunch at
the desk, especially if you are rushing a
project, but taking at least half an hour off
from your work will help you think more
clearly and can be a good way to get to
know your work colleagues.
Say No
Learn to be a little less generous with
your time. This doesn’t mean making life
difficult for your employers and colleagues,
but it does mean putting your foot down
when work tries to creep into your
personal time. Try to keep weekends free if
you can.
In this competitive business environment, it can be all too
easy to findwork taking over everything, but don’t forget to
take some time out fromthe office and the emails. Here are
some handyways to get a little balance back into your life.
Try Something New
Think of something that you have always
wanted to try but never had the time or
the opportunity – this could be anything,
from learning to speak a language, joining
a football team, or learning to scuba
dive. The pleasure of learning something
new far outweighs the time it takes, and
you will easily build in opportunities for
practice. It could even help in your work!
Family First
Make your family a priority and build in
time in your week to see them. Stick a
picture of your family up in your office as
a reminder to leave early enough to have
dinner together, or to ensure that you don’t
miss that school concert or sports event
that mean so much to your children. Make
Sunday evenings a family dinner outing,
inviting your children to pick a place to
go, and prevent yourself slipping back
into work mode before the week has even
begun.
Take to the Skies
Malaysia is well positioned in Southeast
Asia for travel to so many wonderful,
exotic locations, and with flight prices so
competitive, especially off season, you
have little reason not to take advantage
of it. Browse the online travel sites and if
you spot a good deal, book it – once the
commitment has been made, you will
find it easy to plan around it and ease the
process of taking one or two days off
work.
