When he was still in school, Uncle
Shan served part time as an odd job
worker at The Lakehouse, a guesthouse
owned by ex-serviceman Lt. Col. Stanley
Foster, who also managed the Ye Olde
Smokehouse Inn in Tanah Rata.
Upon completing school, he worked
briefly in Singapore, but returned to
Cameron Highlands a year later. Here,
he worked at the prestigious Merlin Inn
(present-day Cameron Highlands Resort)
for four years before joining his father in
the taxi business. There had been a few
more additions to the fleet over time.
The mention of Merlin Inn surfaced a
number of times in our conversations. It
was the birthplace of many fondmemories
and lasting friendships. One such bond
