Approximately 800km south of Bangkok,
Krabi lines the gorgeous Andaman coast
and features some of the most beautiful,
relatively unspoilt beaches in the world.
Also known for its magnificent limestone
formations, lush forested areas, caves and
warm, inviting seas, Krabi hasmuch beauty
and activities to satiate themost cynical of
travelers.
Captivating Krabi
Visit
Ao Nang
is highly popular and slowly
gaining traction as a more upmarket place
in Krabi. With a range of accommoda-
tions, restaurants, shops, easy transport
and other facilities, Ao Nang is one of
the better stocked towns that caters to
every touristy need and functions as an
excellent start point for visiting the rest
of Krabi.
• Also known as Raile or Rai Leh to
others,
Railay Bay
is an island all on
its own and is extremely popular with
Seasons
Visiting Krabi during the low-peak season
of
May
to
October
can be an immensely
joyful experience. The Green season brings
with it lower temperatures, less sun, more
clean, unpolluted rain and far more peace,
calm and quiet. Gone especially, are the
droves of tourists as you are free to explore
more popular towns unhampered by the
crowd and noise. The weather is more
unpredictable, but otherwise, normal Krabi
activities are relatively unaffected, except
where tanning is
involved. What’s
more, you’ll find
that accommo-
dation can get
cheaper around
this time!
Adventure
Snorkelling
is one of the more popu-
lar activities in Krabi and most islands
are suitable for this. Some prime spots
for snorkeling include: Ao Nang, Railay
Bay, Koh Lanta and Phi Phi Islands as
well as the 4 Islands (Chicken, Si, Tub
and Poda). It also has some of the best
spots for
scuba diving
.
Kayaking
is an excellent way to
independently explore the coastlines
and beaches up close as well as islands
around the Andaman. A popular kayaking
spot is Tha Lane, which is in proximity to
various caves and mangrove areas.
Cycling
is an excellent way to tour
the countryside and literally get off the
beaten path into manually carved paths
away from the noise and traffic of the
rock climbers due to its
towering limestone cliffs.
Also of notable mention
are its beautiful, wide,
sandy beaches. East
Railay is where most
boats from Krabi Town
dock, although the beach
is unsuitable for swim-
ming or sunbathing.
• Charming, peace-
ful and laid back,
Koh
Klang
is a small, Muslim fishing village
that still subsists on rice cultivation and
oceanic harvesting. A five minute boat
ride from Krabi Town, it is the perfect
place to get away from the hustle and
bustle of large, tourist crowds and areas
to immerse yourself in the culture and
way of life of the people of Koh Klang.
• Krabi’s
Koh Lanta
is also home to
a small tribe of Sea Gypsies, known in
the local dialect as “Chao Leh”. Thought
to be one of the first inhabitants of the
Andaman coastal areas of Thailand,
Myanmar and Malaysia, their origins are
not well documented. They number in the
thousands, and only a rare few still live
the true traditional, nomadic life.
cities and see Krabi without the baggage
of overhyped glitz and glam. You can rent
mountain bikes in either Krabi Town or
Ao Nang.
