Kuala Lumpur’s
Chinatown culinary legacy continues to be a lip smacking and
tummy warming experience in the midst of rapid development. From food that has
been the staple of the early Chinese workers to the invigorating smell of coffee, these
local stalls and shops continue to draw their faithful crowds and the constantly evolving
area remains a gem to be explored.
Madras Lane (Non-Halal)
The only wet market in KL’s Chinatown
also serves as one of the best places for
Malaysian street food. One can sample
anything from curry
laksa
to
yong tau fu
,
chee cheong fun
to
cendol
. The best time
to go is from 10a.m. as most of the stalls
would be fully operational by then. The
highlight is the famous Madras Lane
yong
tau fu
(assorted vegetables, tofu stuffed
with fish paste) stall – don’t be surprise
if you end up queuing for half an hour to
get the goods. Their deep fried bean curd
is very popular and tends to get snapped
up pretty quickly.
Do note that the stalls are highly ter-
ritorial – like the “no outside food policy”
you see in some restaurants, you will not
be served by a stall if you are not sitting
within their designated area. However
some stalls have formed alliances and you
are able to order foods from any of the
stalls within the alliance and sit anywhere
within their territory. To clear any doubts,
youmaywant to ask the stall owner before
sitting down to enjoy your food.
