Gerai Makanan Sai Kee (Non-
Halal)
Sai Kee primarily caters to local crowds
simply because it is tucked away in an
alley between Jalan Petaling and Jalan
Sultan. If you are new to this area, chances
are you’ll never walk into this alley as it
can be pretty dark and intimidating at
night.
Specialties include stir-fried eggplant
with prawns, spinach soupwith fish paste,
and steamed porkwith salted fish to name
a few. Ask for the menu or recommenda-
tions from the wait staff.
It is advisable to pre-order your food
before coming over. They once told me
that I had to wait two hours because of
the public holiday crowd. Suffice to say,
now I would always call before dropping
by. Even then the average wait time is
roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
Soong Kee Beef Noodle
Restaurant and Low Yau Kee
Porridge Stall (Non-Halal)
If you are feeling adventurous, Soong Kee
and LowYau Kee is just a fewminutes trek
away from Petaling Street. It is advisable
to come here on foot here as there are no
parking spaces nearby.
Soong Kee serves up beef noodles with
tasty minced pork sauce laden with MSG
accompanied by a bowl of soup with
beef tripe, sliced beef and beef balls and
not to mention more MSG. Unlike Italian
pastas where each type of pasta is shaped
accordingly to hold different types of
sauces, the minced pork sauce is designed
to stick itself to whatever noodles it gets
paired up with.
Right in front of Soong Kee is Low Yau
Kee. They serve up delicious porridge.
You can have your porridge with raw
fish slices which will be cooked once you
dip it in the hot porridge, deep fried pork
intestine, silky smooth steamed chicken or
with homemade minced pork meatballs.
My favourite is always to order a bowl of
porridge with pork intestines and minced
pork balls with an extra side order of sliced
raw fish.

Lorong Pau (Non-Halal)
The alley right beside Amo Coffee hides
another gem. It is a stall with no signage
sellingsteamedbuns (otherwiseknown
as
Pau

inmodern restaurant, youwill see them
kneading the dough in the open. The
dough will eventually be filled with
different types of fillings and steamed
on the spot using traditional bamboo
steamers.
