crumbs, and then fried is something
that is usually found in Europe, but I
had yet to find an impressive version in
Malaysia until I had the one here. Served
with a bed of mashed potatoes, roasted
pumpkin and rocket salad, the chicken
is especially yummy here as Parmesan
cheese is added to the flour coating. Not
overly oily, crunchy yet tender inside,
this dish made for good comfort food
that would be easily enjoyed by everyone.
I was pretty stuffed after the three
dishes, but still had room for desserts.
After all, how could I resist the temptation
of trying out the sumptuous selection
that was offered here? I went with the
signature Tiramisu, Banana & Passion
Fruit with Cream Cheese Cake and the
Turtle Cheesecake. Wanting something
different, I decided to have my dessert
outdoors instead, on the steel chairs and
tables at the Courtyard where sunlight
shone through the trees and shade with a
gentle breeze, contributing to the serene,
peaceful ambience.
It goes without saying that the
cakes were extremely delicious,
my favourite being the Banana &
Passion Fruit with Cream Cheese
Cake. The sourness of the pas-
sion fruit balanced well with the
sweetness of the banana and
cream cheese, making it heaven
with every bite. The Tiramisu
certainly proved to be the best in
Penang, a delightful combination
of coffee, cream cheese, nuts and
a tinge of liquor. Lastly, the Turtle
Cheese Cake is a real treat for
sweet-lovers featuring cheese,
rich chocolate and smooth cara-
mel – all the best things a cake
can have.
I would definitely return to
China House again in my next
trips to Penang, simply because
there’s so much more that I have
yet to try. I made a mental note
to return again to try out more
cakes (with a group of friends,
of course, so we could order more to test
out) and also to try out the other dining
places within China House, and perhaps
chill out with a drink at the quirky looking
bar. There’s plenty of reasons why you
should not give this place a miss – the
good food, the great ambience, the amaz-
ing interior and architecture; need I say
more?
divided into four boxes with an additional
individual container for soup. The soup
was a delightful and aromatic boiled
Herbal Chicken Soup with an unusual
added touch of Mini Glutinous Rice Balls
& Spring Onion. Don’t let its name fool
you though, as the food served in the
Bento Box is not Japanese, but local
fusion instead. The contents for
the Bento Box Special differs
daily, and my meal for the day
was Sautéed Turnip & Carrot with
Dried Shrimp Dumpling, Kaffir
Lime Leaves Mini Bun Stuffed
with Indian Spiced Pumpkin &
Chicken, Thai Chili Peanut Dip,
Crispy Chicken Fingers Served
with Thousand Island Sauce
and Chrysanthemum Perfumed
Rice with Dried Cranberry & Mix
Herbs.
The highlight of the dish for
me was the rice itself with its
unusual combination of dried
cranberry and mix herbs, giv-
ing it an unusual yet gratifying
taste. The mini bun was great
as an appetiser while the Crispy
Chicken Fingers were crispy on
the outside and tender on the
inside, although I must admit that
I took pleasure in dipping them
in the tangibly delicious Thai
Chili Peanut Dip instead. Being a big fan
of turnip, I enjoyed the taste of the Sau-
téed Turnip & Carrot with Dried Shrimp
Dumpling very much, as it resembled a
favourite of mine, the Teochew
chai kueh
(vegetable dumpling).
