What are KPJ’s plans for future develop-
ment?
KPJ is committed to providing more beds
through our “Capacity Expansion” plan to
cater to an influx of local and international
patients in six of our existing hospitals.
We have also introduced new facilities &
services such as IVF (In-Vitro Fertilisation)
and “Senior Living Care”.
KPJ is also committed to the building
of six new hospitals by 2020 under the
Malaysian government’s ETP (Economic
Transformation Programme). This is
projected to help to boost the Malaysian
economy by generating value through
the creation of new jobs and hopefully
increase the share of KPJ’s revenue from
medical tourism to 25%, up from from
4% in 2013.
environment being conducive to Muslims
from all over; we are recognised as a
Halal
Hub. We attract a lot more patients from
OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation)
and GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council)
countries.
I think, perhaps, one of the best things
about undergoing medical attention,
especially for less critical care cases, would
be the recuperation period – medical tour-
ists can sightsee or engage in other tourist
activities during their convalescence.
We have medical centers in proximity to
popular and beautiful beach or tourist
locations!
How is KPJ the best provider of medical
tourism?
We are focused on Patient-Centered ser-
vices. For starters, we are maintaining our
premier wards and enhancing our special
services capability by providing Arab,
Japanese, Spanish and Korean speaking
staff to be based in the hospitals to help
put our foreign patients at ease to enable
smooth delivery of our services.
We operate nationwide, making multi-
discipline tertiary medical care easily
accessible not only to tourists, but expats
and locals as well. Some of the popular
treatments and procedures sought by
medical tourists tend to be health screen-
ings, cardiac procedures, cancer treat-
ments, orthopaedic procedures, neurology
& neurosurgery treatments and fertility
treatments.
KPJ hospitals located in the Johor
Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor areas
are catered to high end patients from
Indonesia and Singapore as well, due to
upon their arrival at the airports. We
also officially opened our first Middle
Eastern Regional Office in Dubai in May
2014, which serves as a one stop center
for potential patients from the GCC. The
facilitation of patient inquiries is provided
by our Dubai office by Arab speaking
professionals free of charge. The services
offered comprise Doctor Appointments,
Visa applications, inbound logistics in
Malaysia and also the settling of accom-
modation for patients and even their
accompanying family members!
KPJ is also customising treatments and
services in accordance with the culture
and beliefs of patients. Brochures with
pertinent patient information have been
published to help answer queries from
foreign visitors. In some of the major
medical tourismmarkets, coordinators and
KPJ representatives have been appointed
to promote KPJ hospitals more aggres-
sively and aid in the smooth transition of
medical tourists from their countries to
KPJ’s hospitals.
the concentration of elite residential areas
within those regions (examples include
KPJ Ampang Puteri, KPJ Tawakkal, KPJ
Damansara and KPJ Johor Specialist
Hospitals). As we have been treatingmany
international patients from Indonesia, Sin-
gapore, the Middle East and North Africa,
many patients recognise and acknowledge
our premium services.
Also, where we can help it, we offer
patients
halal
options under our “Informed
Choice Medication” scheme, such as
offering a non-porcine version of a popular
diarrhea medication.
What areKPJ’s target demographics like?
KPJ targets patients from Indonesia due
to the accessibility of direct flights and
close proximity to Malaysia. Furthermore,
Malaysia is one of the easiest countries to
enter – most foreigners from the Middle
East don’t even need to fill in a landing
form.
Recently, Malaysia is increasingly seen
as an destination for foreign governments
(i.e. UAE &GCC countries). They are look-
ing for an alternative option or healthcare
destination to refer their patients to, and
halal food has become a concern for many
Muslim travellerswhen it comes to seeking
premier healthcare services overseas.
Because we are an OIC country, it is far
easier for Muslim patients and foreigners
to enjoy and assimilate into our culture
due to a religious affinity.
Other thanMedical Tourism, are there any
other service lines that KPJ provides?
We have Pick-up and “Meet and Greet”
services that are available for patients
