STORY
Carousel of Dreams
I
love theme parks. I always have
since I was a wee little girl. Hid-
den somewhere in the back of my
somewhat organised, rote life, there
is a quiet bubbling of a deep-seated
desire to feel adrenaline-charged
blood course through my veins.
Have you ever felt this strong, pressing
need to lose yourself in that heady rush
of excitement; to be able to feel that je
ne sais quoi, to take risks and feel alive?
If you do, you’re probably an adrenaline
junkie and theme parks with roller coast-
ers are probably right up your alley. This
is also probably why the idea of theme
parks was conceived – somewhere along
the line, some genius thought to himself
that money could be made by making
people fly into the air and make them
pay for the opportunity to do so. To that,
I say,
salut
, sir, and thank you for the
opportunity!
These days, however, not all theme
parks are cut from the same cloth. What
of those who cannot go on thrill rides? The
pregnant, the young, the frail, the elderly,
and the fearful – surely they would like
some excitement while their thrill-seeking
companions rush off to chase the skies in
multiple g-force rollercoasters, right?
That’s why theme parks now incorpo-
rate a host of attractions to try to cater to
the different segments of holiday goers and
thrill seekers. From adrenaline junkies to
honeymooning couples to families with
young children, there is always something
for everyone.
Follow me as I explore theme parks
around the region so you can plan ahead
for the December holidays.
Sanrio Hello Kitty Town,

Japan’s many offerings run the gamut
from cute to weird to downright baffling.
It also happens to be the birthplace of
arguably one of the most popular icons
in the world, Hello Kitty, which has
curiously driven hordes of people into
throes of fanaticism for their products
(case in point: Hello Kitty Happy Meal
queues in Singapore).
Well, fans, time to rejoice. You don’t
need to go all the way to Japan to get up
close and personal with your favourite
(albeit confusing) anthropomorphic-cat-
girl icon – she’s right there in Nusajaya,
Johor and merely a short 20-minute drive
from the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link
