Burger Heaven: Fat Boy’s

Fat Boy’s to see if theymake the cut
SAVOUR
O
ver
the weekend, I
was invited to partake
in the consumption of
what I understood as
delicious burgers at a
burger bar in Publika
by their manager,
Reuben. Aforementioned manager’s che-
rubic smile was the first thing that hit me
when I walked in. The second was the
fact that Johnny Cash was happily belting
out “Ring of Fire” in the background.
Goodness. I’m not too sure, but I’m
guessing it was the Johnny Cash that
sealed the deal; it was almost surreal how
warm and aptly American everything
felt. Being Canadian, I was more than
acquainted with the American culture,
and as far as first impressions go, I was
suitably impressed and almost convinced
that Fat Boy’s really knew what they
were doing.
The atmosphere inside exuded a cer-
tain contemporariness that was subdued
by the comfort of classic American diner-
styled tables; it was a nice contrast against
the modern art deco on the walls.
Spoilt for choice
We settled ourselves on the chairs at-
tached to the higher counter tops and
casually chatted with Reuben while we
waited for our curated dinner experience
to arrive. With an excitingly extensive
menu, we were rather spoilt for choice,
so we allowed him to order on our behalf.
Did you know that you could liter-
ally build your own burger here? Each
part of the burger, from the bun to the
condiments is interchangeable – from
the menu given, you simply choose
whatever it is you want (you have three
meats to choose from – chicken, beef
and pork) to see inside your burger and
they will build it for you. We, however,
chose not to and decided to go with their
recommendations instead.
The concept was started in Singapore
by two brothers who were tired of the
quality of burgers that they were getting.
Taking matters into their own hands,
Fat Boy’s was born. With four outlets in
Singapore, they expanded into Malaysia,
with outlets at Publika, Avenue K and
1 City.
A strange satisfaction
While my date ordered a Root Beer Float,
a certain drink on the menu caught my
attention. It said “The Baconator”, and it
is what it suggests – a drink with bacon
in it. Curiosity thoroughly piqued, I read
on. “The Baconator” is apparently a shake
Behold the magnificence that is the ‘Pirates of The Caribbacon’.
