Gunung Ledang Johor National
Park
Mount Ophir, or more commonly known
by its Malay name, Gunung Ledang, is a
mountain situated in the Gunung Ledang
National Park located in Ledang District.
Standing at 1,276m (4,186 ft), is the
highest mountain in Southern Peninsular
Malaysia.
There is a popular Malaysian folklore
that talks of a princess with magical
powers who resided on the mountain. She
was wooed by the then Sultan of Malacca,
Sultan Mahmud Shah, but she set him
Taman Laut Sultan Iskandar
Located in Mersing, the marine park
consists of six clusters – namely Pulau
Aur, Pulau Tinggi, Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau
Besar, Pulau Rawa and Pulau Sibu.
Taman Laut Sultan Iskandar covers
over 8,000 hectares.
The islands are endowed with crystal
clear waters, powdery white sand and
diverse marine life.
Spend a relaxing day by the seaside or
take part in watersport activities such as
snorkeling, diving and kayaking.
impossible tasks to undertake. With a
formidable presence it has a reputation
for being a profoundly spiritual place. Till
this day, mystics still make their way up
Gunung Ledang to meditate.
As for mountain climbers, theywill find
the mountain a refreshing challenge and
a test of stamina.
Gunung Ledang is also the 64th highest
peak in Malaysia and arguably the most
climbed mountain in the country.
Tanjung Piai Johor National Park
Tanjung Piai Johor National Park covers
an area of over 926 hectares. Of that,
about 526 hectares are coastal mangroves.
Its 8km shoreline borders the Straits of
Malacca.
Tanjung Piai was recognised by the
Ramsar Conservation 1971 as a wetland
of international importance. It was desig-
nated a Ramsar Site in 2003, whichmeant
that its ecological character cannot be
changed by human activity.
Looming in the distance, out at the
sea, the traditional fishermen boats are
dwarfed by modern supertankers – a
phenomenal sight and a reminder that
you are standing at the edge of the world’s
busiest waterway.
Pulau Kukup Johor National Park
Pulau Kukup measures approximately
647 hectares, and is surrounded by some
800 hectares of mudflats. Nearby is the
150-year-old fishing village of Kukup in
Pontian – an area steeped in history.
An important regional trading post
at the turn of the century, Kukup is syn-
onymous with tales of fallen pirates and
enterprising early pioneers, although an
abrupt decline in fortune nearly reduced
the place into a ghost town. This day,
however, it is revived as a modern-day
tourist hub.
