Ulu Watu for Surfers
Hidden within the gargantuan waves lies a breath-taking
surfing experience for professional surfers. No corals stabbing
you through the foot, no angry waves dragging you out to the
shark infested oceans, no towering waters ready to send you
drowning in the blue abyss. The waters give you just the right
rush. With a surf board in hand, all tourists come out to find
the perfect wave, and nothing says “I love you” like riding a
wave with your special someone.
Ulu Watu is a surf break hidden along a cliff, beneath the
shadows of an ancient temple. If the waters look a little rough,
there’s always room for some temple-exploration. Cafés and
surf shops trickle down to the waters below, boasting stellar
views.
waters make up the Gili Islands. Once
relatively unknown, the island has ex-
plodedwith dozens of pasty tourists laying
out on the sandy shores hoping for that
sun-kissed glow.
You can expect no speeding motor-
bikes, cheap cafés or stray dogs growling
at you. Development has been kept to a
minimum, so expect very few concrete
eyesores.
Trawangan is vibrant, Gili Air is totally
local, while Menu is the perfect desert-
island getaway. So grab your partner, hit
all three islands and get your beach on.
Bali offers everything to everyone. Couples
can head out for a quiet getaway, party
the nights away with tourists, mingle with
other expats or shop till your wallet begs
for you to stop. No matter what you do,
married or unmarried, old or prepubes-
cent; the island begs for you to fall in
love all over again, with it and with your
significant other.
Ubud for Yogis
Culture seeps from each crevice. Ubud
is home to tonnes of vegan restaurants,
vegan cafés, vegan ice cream parlours –
you get the drift? But that doesn’t mean
you can’t find the occasional sin-fuelled
eatery sticking out like a sore thumb.
Artsy, serene and creative, Ubud at-
tracts a largely spiritual crowd. With a
majority Hindu community, it boasts
various yoga centres which offer daily
classes at reasonable prices. Since the “Eat,
Pray, Love” fiasco, expats have arrived by
the truckloads hoping for their own little
hipster romance.
It’s a place you stop by on your way
home, but as days, weeks and months
go by, Ubud’s warm hold has a way to
perpetually keep you around.
Gili for Beach Bums
Three teeny-weeny desert islands, framed
by white beaches and swaying coconut
palms surrounded by clear turquoise
