Palaces of Potsdam
Views from the roof of Berlin Cathedral
was worth it. The museum is interactive
and fascinating, encouraging visitors to
try on clothes, poke around in a kitchen
and listen in on secret conversations for
a brief taste of life inside the first socialist
state on German soil.
Germany demonstrates an equally
deft touch in relation to remembering
the brutalities of the Second World War
– another incident that casts a shadow
on the country’s past. We were all blown
away by the Memorial to the Murdered
Jews of Europe, a sculpture to be admired
both for its simplicity and profundity.
Walk within the large grey blocks and
then take the stairs beneath the pavement
to visit a moving exhibition that brings to
life the ‘real stories’ of the Holocaust – it’s
harrowing at times, but an important visit
to make nonetheless.
The war will seem like recent history
when you begin an exploration of the
main thoroughfare of the tourist centre –
starting at the magnificent Brandenburg
Gate – as neoclassical grandeur and
sweeping marble buildings and statues
architecturally link Berlin to adored cities
like Paris and Florence, keeping your
camera busy.
