which sits beside Museum Island and

Whet the Appetite
Don’t cut your time in Berlin short – there
is not only a seemingly endless list of
‘must sees’ in the city centre, but some
glorious places to be visited just outside
the capital. If you do have to go on a one
day trip, let it be to Potsdam. Grab some
lunch at one of the German bakeries and
thenmarvel at the structural detritus from
the time when the Prussian Royal Family
called the city home: palace after palace
looms out of glorious gardens, each more
ostentatious and indulgent than the last,
and each possessing a former owner with
a personality as colourful and intriguing
as his home.
My memories of Berlin are a flash of
colour and fascination, from the blue sky
above the city from the roof of the Reich-
stag to the crisp ping of a currywurst eaten
after a long day. We drank German beer,
we posed with bears, we remembered the
past and we skipped along to the pulse of
Berlin present, impressed by the warm
welcome from the locals and the efficiency
with which this world-renowned country
operates.
It’s a city that delights and surprises,
with layers to be peeled away to reveal
more depth and intrigue than the guide-
books can explain. Add it to the list and get
ready to slip under the surface of a capital
that has faced more than many, and yet
still stands firm.
