and shortly after, accepted the offer to fly
with them as a stewardess.
However, it is not all about the aesthet-
ics - the MBA holder is of the belief that
being an air stewardess is a solid, holistic
way to learn valuable lifelong skills, and is
an excellent method for themore inhibited
and bashful of our lot to break out of their
shells.
“For starters, not only does one learn
top notch grooming skills to keep oneself
looking fantastic and feeling confident,
but being in the service line means that
a set of softer skills are cultivated as well.
“On the physical side, you are taught
the proper ways to applymakeup and style
your hair so you can look professional and
confident, but you are also trained to be
poised, classy, and feminine.
“I think it’s a really great training
ground for girls to pick up communication
skills too, especially since you would be
required to converse with passengers of
all walks of life every single day.
“You learn how to maintain your com-
posure and deal with difficult individuals,
which helps to build your patience and
professionalism, things that shape your
character in the long run.”
Whilst running the interview, i was
were continually amazed by her tresses,
and it became apparent later on that
her lustrous locks were more a result
of careful and meticulous hair care and
grooming than just pure luck in the genes
department.
Being the owner of a head of frizzy,
unmanageable hair and who has tried
all manner of methods and hair taming
products (to not much success), I at-
tempted to get her to spill her secrets – her
answer surprised me.
“Let me tell you a secret – I do not
condition my hair.”
“Yes, you heard right – I do not condi-
tion my hair.”, she affirmed amusedly.
“I just wash my hair normally, once
every two days, and apply a hair masque
each time.
“Additionally, to maintain the sheen
and moisture, I pump a few drops of
my favourite hair treatment essence, the
Mythic Oil from L’Oreal Professionnel
– you can only get this in salons, by the
way – into my palm, run it through my
hair, and, et voila, my hair looks great and
smells absolutely divine!”
Surely she jested, I blurted. Apparently
not, as she proceeded to take out a bottle of
the mythical ‘Mythic Oil’ she spoke about
to let me have a try at said product.
Whilst testing it (indeed, it tamed
my frizz almost instantly, much to my
utter amazement), she continued with
some beauty tips for airplane travellers,
especially those who need to travel over
long distances, bolstering her advice with
her past experience as a flight stewardess.
“Many people focus far too much
on their hair, but neglect their scalp. I
think that it’s important that the roots of
your crowning glory are maintained by
alternating hair and scalp care shampoos.
“I strongly believe in a holistic approach
to beauty – while it is important to care
for your hair with professional products,
but it should also be complemented with
a proper, healthful diet – what you ingest
is just as important as what you put on.
“Hydration is essential to keeping your
body’s systems working, and, especially
on a plane, the air is drying and your
skin and hair will suffer. I also spritz on
thermal water – you can easily get one at
pharmacies – onto my face during long
flights to freshen up.
“Stewardesses are especially prone
to stress on a plane, as they are not only
expected to serve passengers, but tidy the
plane up, walk around and even clean
toilets – all the while still managing to
look as a fresh as when they just started
the day!”
“To me, the opportunity to fly was a
very valuable experience, and it was a
powerful, eye-opening one. I would say
that flying has made me the person that
I am, today.”
