Joe hopes that the first thing they would
do is to make music. Too Phat began
because they both wanted to make rap
songs and did not start out wanting to
make a rap group. “I’ve worked with so
many people, it’s nothing like working
with Malique. We have a certain bond, a
certain chemistry that is amazing. I miss
working in the studio with Malique.”
Fashion started early for Joe. Back in
the days it was all about the baggy jeans,
Timberland boots, Fubu and the biggest
pants one can buy. “I think I’ve gone
through and grown into having my own
sense of style right now. I looked back at
a lot of the pictures and I’m like … why
did I wear that, why was my hair like
that, why did I try to keep that beard,” Joe
bursts out laughing. To Joe, fashion and
music are always hand-in-hand because
fashion can never stay the same and
music is like that too. Just like fashion,
hip-hop is always evolving. Joe says, “10
years ago you wouldn’t imagine EDM or
house music DJs working with rappers
but today it’s not a problem. You’ll never
imagine Rossa singing with Joe Flizzow
or the late Sharifah Aini singing with Too
Phat. Music has no rules just like fashion.
But, it is important to look decent. I al-
ways tell my artists look the part because
people look at you. As a rapper, you need
to look in character cause you are after
all, an artist.”
During his free time
Joe who enjoys playing pool confidently
says he is pretty good as he has a pool
table at home also reads quite a bit. He
reads everything especially stories that
has a lot of twists and not too farfetched
from reality. Joe’s favourite author is
Jeffrey Archer. Other than that, Joe also
spends a lot of time online. He reads
alternative news and he rarely watches
news on TV. “There’s always two sides
to a story.”
Joe who speaks passionately about
hip-hop even picks his travel destination
where hip-hop is alive. Putting Bangkok
on his favourite list of places to visit
alongside Tokyo and Yokohama as the
people are friendly and he has a lot of
friends there too. But topping his list is his
most favourite place, New York. To him,
New York is where he can be alone for
two weeks and he “feels alright.”
Joe’s kind of woman
Currently single, Joe who believes
intelligence is the most important
thing a woman should have and one
who speaks well as he speaks well is
something he looks for in a partner.
“Being passionate about whatever they
do regardless if you like jumping out of
planes or you like skydiving and if you
are passionate about it, I respect that.
I cannot settle for somebody who is
normal. I need to be with someone who
has something special. Don’t get me
wrong, there’s always something special
in every woman, it’s a matter of whether
they want to share it or not. A confident
person and one who respects herself is
something I’d like to have in a partner. I
was brought up by my mother and she
taught me to always respect women. A
woman who wants to be respected needs
to respect herself first.”
