Great Mosque of
Samarra is a mosque unlike
any other. The spiralling
structure on a square base
was contructed using
bricks and clay back in the

have to go all the way to Iraq to view
its unique architecture. At the Islamic
Civilisation Park (or its Malay acronym
TTI for Taman Tamadun Islam) in Kuala
Terengganu, there is a miniature replica of
the Great Mosque of Samarra and 22 other
monuments of Islamic architecture from all
over the world.
Launched in 2008 during Visit
Terengganu Year, the Islamic Civilisation
Park is a tourist attraction befitting the first
Malay state to accept Islam as evidenced
by the famed Inscribed Stone Tablet (Batu
Bersurat). In fact, the park is located not far

houses the historical artefact, on an island

Surrounded by the Terengganu River,
the park’s location is given added meaning
