Elysia Mun:
Co-Pilot in the Clouds
In a Jest
Hailing fromthe seaside town of Port Dickson,
ElysiaMunMei Quan never expected to
pursue a career in flying. Everyone, fromher
family to her friends, expected her to become
a doctor. Clearly, it is a decision in life that
Elysia has never looked back on.
IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
“I love my job. There are certainly not many vocations in life that
can afford me the experience that Firefly does. Noted that flying
does take a lot, and since I am a woman, many have said that it
is not suitable for me. However, I have proved them all wrong.”
DETERMINATION: KEY TO SUCCESS
“To those who are considering a career in aviation, especially the
ladies, I have a piece of advice for you – if you have a passion, just
go for it! But make sure you have the determination to make it, if
this is what you really want in life. Being a female is no obstacle
to achieving your goals.”
IN SHUTTLING BACK AND FORTH
“Although we don’t have long flights, we do not have much
time before taking off again once we land at a destination. Our
turnaround time is usually around twenty minutes, just enough
for passengers to step off and the new ones to step on! We make
as many as four to five trips back and forth on a selected route
every day. The four of us (pilot, co-pilot and two cabin staff)
always begin our day together, and end our day together. It’s a
close-knit team.”
TIME DOES FLY
“Sadly, there is really not much time for social life. Work takes
up quite a lot of time actually, and I find myself very devoted to
the role. All in, however, we work no more than six days straight,
and with the only other day of the week left – I just want to relax
and recoup at home.”
GREATEST FEELING
“There is no better feeling than ending your day with a very good
landing. There is always the possibility of danger, but it is my
duty to make it a safe flight.”
UP IN THE CLOUDS
“One of the great things about being up there in the cockpit is
being able to see and enjoy the vast and varied landscapes from
above. Every sunrise and sunset up here is special, feels like
being in a dream world. It’s like going diving… yet different in
the sense that it is in the sky. You see new things, begin to have
a new appreciation for what you do, and have more respect for
the environment.”
