try shrouded by
some dark stories.
There have been
many l egends,
myths and fables
surrounding this
beautiful country. Having such a rich
background filledwith an air of magic and
mysticism makes for interesting bedtime
stories. Suchwas the setting for the legend
of
Puteri Gunung Ledang
.
The story takes us back to a period
(1400), when a powerful
Sultan
ruled
Malacca. It talks about a beautiful princess
who supposedly lived on
Mount Ledang
also known as
Mount Ophir
in Johor.
Everyone knew about her, she was the
‘Angelina Jolie’ of her time and her beauty
was unsurpassed.
At that time back inMalacca, the
sultan
aka king, was still grieving over his dead
wife, the queen. He was not his usual
ruling self and his ministers were starting
to get worried. They began introducing
him to a princesses from other states, but
the king could not bring himself to love
again leaving everyone to believe all hope
was lost.
The people began to get worried that
their strong ruler might succumb to grief
and feared that he would destroy himself.
But hope was not all lost because there
was still the beautiful princess of Gunung
Ledang. The king heard through the
grapevine about her astonishing beauty,
jet black hair and milky skin and was
struck by cupid’s arrow. He absolutely
had to have her!
He ordered his men to make the trip
from Malacca all the way down to Johor
get
away
and propose to the princess on his behalf.
The team consisted of the king’s best men
Hang Tuah
,
Sang Setia
and
Tun Mamat
.
It was no easy task getting to the top
of the mountain. It was a long journey
and it was just full of obstacles. Mid way
through the journey the tired group of
men encountered a rainstorm.. The story
goes on to say that
Hang Tuah
was not at
the prime of his age decided to skip out
of the adventure.
It was up to the rest of the men who
gathered their strength and climbed,
finally reaching the peak of Mount Ledang.
The peak was a sure sight to behold.
While
Tun Mamat
was busy looking
around and enjoying this magnificent
sights, out pops a creepy old lady,
Nenek
Kebayan
. This is an old lady who used to
frighten and send shockwaves to children.
One can only imagine the shock on
Tun Mamat
’s face when he encountered
