The most challenging aspect of her
job as a public relations associate is the
need to constantly communicate with
the media and both internal and external
stakeholders on what is going on with
the company. In addition to that, she
has to provide public relations support to
other team members whenever the need
arises. Regardless of how the profession is
being portrayed by novels or Hollywood
movies, it requires hard work, especially
in the airline industry.
It is a lot to do but after two years
of being with Firefly, Sureena already
knows the ropes. She knows what to
expect from each project that she has to
partake in, thanks to her understanding
of mass communications. As a public
relations representative, she knows that
it is important to be well versed about
the industry you are working in. Sureena
always makes sure that she keeps abreast
with current issues and what the com-
petitors are doing. According to her, the
key is to find the most effective way in
communicating and maintaining a good
relationship with the media.
Staying Ahead
“My day at the office is all about prepar-
ing and proofreading press releases, in-
flight announcements, press kits, talking
points and formal letters to government
bodies. I also have to do the same with
proposals or presentation slides for senior
executives and updates for our inflight
magazine,

. Interest and skills in
writing come in handy for these purposes.
I also support various teams in developing
content and communication materials
such as Customer Care script, iPad survey
questionnaires, EDM and SMS blasts,
print advertisements, outdoor/ambient
advertisements, leaflets and brochures,”
shares Sureena about her typical day at
work.
The Murdoch University graduate
always stays ahead of the
competitors by studying and
understandingmarket trends and
their strategies. This is important
to ensure the airline’s plan is
competitive with changing needs.
She will then share her findings in
brainstorming sessions with the
Marketing and Events, Ancillary and
Branding teams to develop campaign
strategies and themes to appeal to the
airline’s target audiences.
Work and Pleasure
Being able to travel and host the me-
dia at awesome tourist destinations
such as Krabi, Penang, Langkawi and
Tioman Island is one of the perks of her
job with an airline provider like Firefly.
Sureena has had a lot of opportunities to
experience popular tourist activities and
has stayed at many different hotels at
each destination.
The degree holder in Communications,
Technology and Policy was born and
raised in Subang Jaya. Prior to her current
stint at Firefly, the self-confessed cat lover
was in a branding and advertising agency
for three years. Her first experience in the
field was as an intern at a public relations
agency. Sureena has two younger broth-
ers and loves to read, swim and of course,
travel. When she is not busy trying to be
at two different places at once, Sureena
loves to watch television series. “I always
