are lines outside the eateries in Haji Lane
all serving up the best Indian-Muslim
cuisine. Not far from there you’ll find Zam
Zam on Arab Street which serves the best
murtabak, an Indian-Muslim staple made
from savoury flatbread, stuffed with egg
and your choice of chicken or mutton.
Haji Lane is the big spot for the hipster
scene, housing indie enclaves filled with
hints of patchouli floating through the air.
In the past year, this street has taken on
a new look with new cafes and a whole
new crowd. If you’re looking for the area
you can also refer to it as “kampong
glam” which means “glamorous village”.
This predominantly Malay area is a great
mix of with cultural richness amidst
modern shop lots.
Nom Nom Nom
There are over 17 cafes in this area alone,
so finding a place to eat is no problem.
Stateland is a cafe that’s popular with
diners. Since the whole all day breakfast
took off, Stateland jumped on the band-
wagon and has shattered expectations
with its eclectic menu. They sure know
how to cook up a feast, serving things
like hazelnut honey toast and red velvet
waffles. If you’re not looking for anything
sweet, the eggs benedict will hit the spot.
Plenty of food choices
Ink Up
If you’re looking for a haircut or to get
some body art done, Bali Lane has numer-
ous places that cater to this. Hounds of
the Baskervilles, an old school barber-
shop, will transport you back to the days
of swing music, suspenders and bowler
hats. Remaining as one of the last vestiges
of masculine refuge, this is one manly
shop that focuses on quality service.
Started in 2012 by a young Singaporean
of mixed heritage, the store is not just a
gimmick. The team is so talented that
they’ve received numerous accolades,
both locally and globally. And after you
get a sleek new hair style you can always
pop in the back of the shop for custom
tattoo work.
With your sleek new threads, full
belly and boutique pieces, don’t leave
Singapore without getting some souvenirs
for your folks back home. There are many
shops near Arab street that sell various
trinkets and t-shirts that will take care of
all your souvenir needs.
Singapore has plenty to offer on its
colourful streets. It’s a beautiful blend of
culture and heritage framed by modern
innovations. It’s artsy. It’s rich. It’s a
perfect place to wander.
