The gastronomy capital of France
Ask any Frenchman and he will attest that Lyon is the food centre of the country, with
2,000 restaurants (and counting) competing for attention in a city known for so many
wonderful specialities you will need to stay a week to try them all. Traditional dishes
to try include
Salade lyonnaise
(lettuce, bacon, crotons and poached egg),
Rosette de
Lyon
(cured sausage) and
Quenelle de Brochet
(fish dumplings in a rich sauce). It is also
worth trying out themodern restaurants that are popping up in quieter neighbourhoods,
where fine dining doesn’t get much more creative!
A cultural heartland
As cultural as it is historical, the city houses amultitude of museums to cater to a variety
of interests, from the Natural History Museum to the Lumière museum dedicated to
the history of cinema. If you only visit one, let it be the Musèe de Beaux Arts (fine arts
museum). This 19th century palace houses one of the country’s best collections of
sculptures, drawings and decorative art from the 16th century right up to themodern day.
The call of the river
Two rivers slice their way through Lyon – the Saône and the Rhône – allowing for much
of the city to be admired from the water. Various companies offer cruises along the river
to explore the city by day or night, while others combine site-seeing with an elaborate
meal on-board – what better way to soak up the pleasures of Lyon!
Close to Beaujolais
The city is located 30 minutes from the traditional wine growing area of Beaujolais,
where sleepy villages, beautiful rolling countryside and vineyards attract many, not least
because the wine is exquisite. There are many vineyards across this area to be visited
for a chance to get a first-hand account of how this light and fruity wine is produced
and meet the people who make it.

city between two rivers’,
