to pick up some unique gifts or some
delicious food, they are also a great way
to meet locals and chat to passionate
people who are always happy to answer
questions and give out a few secrets
about life Down Under.
Begin with Brunch
For Sydnians citywide, weekends are
made for a long lazy brunch at one of the
many cafes that dot the streets, where
the welcome is as friendly as the servings
are large and luscious! Start the wake-up
process with a mug of fresh coffee (look
out for unusual home blends in some
cafes) before deliberating over the long
and varied brunch menu that is bound
to include huge cooked breakfasts,
plentiful eggs and some fun vegetarian
options. Aussies love their avocado, so
be bold and include the green stuff in
your breakfast to fit in.
Drinks in Hidden Places
Not content with just grabbing a drink
after work, the latest Sydney craze is
for hidden bars that require detailed
instructions to find, lurking inside what
appear to be abandoned buildings or on
the top floor of dull-looking office blocks.
Search online for the instructions
and then go hunting as these bars are
always exploding with character and
will reward your journey with some
incredible drinks, whether you seek
alcohol or something soft. They are also
likely to be packed with locals come
6pm, so you may even end up making
some new friends!
Hit the beach
There can be no denying that Sydney
boasts some beautiful beaches that can
be enjoyed in any season of the year
providing the skies are sunny and the
rain stays away. Unfortunately, everyone
in Sydney heads to the beach at the
weekend, turning a pleasant afternoon
into something of a rugby scrum.
That said, you can avoid the crowds
by skipping the popular beaches (such
as Bondi) and seeking some of the
more secluded spots – they will be
harder to reach but far more private
and pleasant. Track down Milk Beach
on Vaucluse (just around the coast from
the popular Watson’s Bay, accessible by
ferry) and get ready for beautiful views
of the Harbour Bridge and a slice of
well-earned solitude.
