If
you’re a fan of pastel colours, charming
shophouses and amazing local food,
consider living here. This
Peranakan
enclave is still bursting with old-school
extravagance. The
Peranakans
are
descendants of Chinese immigrants
who married natives from the Malay
Archipelago and BritishMalaya (Malaysia
and Singapore), and they possess a whole
unique culture of their own.Take a stroll
down Joo Chiat’s streets soak up the
history and atmosphere, not to mention
stunning
Peranakan
food.
Kusu Island
Legend
has it that a magical tortoise
transformed itself into an island to save
two shipwrecked sailors - one Malay and
one Chinese. Kusu Island was born. This
island is home to wishing wells, blue
lagoons, clean beaches and even a tortoise
sanctuary. It has become a popular cultural
spot due to its very popular Chinese
temple and the three
kramats
, which are
holy shrines to Malay saints. Devotees
flock to the island to pray for wealth, good
health and many other things. It’s a good
place to learn about Buddhist and Islamic
beliefs as well as boasting of having great
picnic spots.
Pulau Ubin
Pulau
Ubin is one of the last areas in
Singapore that has managed to escape the
onslaught of rapid urbanisation. There is
still the opportunity to be awed by nature
as well as mingling with the friendly
village folk. From mountain biking to
walking along mangrove boardwalks,
there is something for everyone here.
