Sailing Away
Depending on the space available at the outlets, there is often a boat placed out in front, in
keeping with the theme of the restaurant. The decor gets it’s inspiration from traditional Thai
street-side eateries. Colourful wooden chairs and tables with cement floors welcome diners as
they enter the restaurant. Vintage posters add colour to the white washed walls.
What have we got here?
Traditional boat noodles were made from pork and beef, dark soya sauce, pickled bean
curd and spices. It was known to be normally served with meatballs and pig’s liver, with
the soup said to contain cow or pig’s blood mixed with salt for seasoning.
The recipe, however, has been tweaked for Malaysian palates. There are two options of
noodles served - chicken and beef - served in either the
Pathumthani
or
Ayutthaya
broth.
The
Pathumthani
broth uses dark soy sauce, 19 herbs and spices and is slightly sourish.
This broth has a wide profile of aromas stemming from the five-spice powder, star anise
and cinnamon. The broth from
Ayutthaya
has a more intense flavour derived from
the 10 herbs and spices that go into it. This rich broth is much thicker than it’s
Pathumthani
counterpart.
The noodles are simplicity itself. A small serving of glass noodles, a slice
of beef or chicken, a beef or chicken ball, bean sprouts, spring onions and
topped with coriander leaves.
Voila!
The servings are small, so depending on
how big an eater you are, you may get through quite a few bowls.
If you are a competitive soul, there is the challenge of beating the outlet’s current
record of bowls been eaten by one person. Stack those bowls up and show them
off on your Facebook page!
What else…?
There are many other delicious Thai dishes served here. The
Thai Fried Chicken
Wings
, these are tasty and crispy, served with Thai sweet chilli sauce and is one not
to be missed out on. A recent addition to the menu is the
Thai Popeye’s Tempura -
kangkung
(water spinach) leaves cooked in a light batter and served with
soot yot
dipping sauce. The sauce has a
tomyam
flavour with extra
santan,
and compliments
the tempura very well.
Rice dishes are also available, with a firm favourite being the
Kra Pow Chicken
Rice
The aroma of the dish is tantalizing and makes you eager to dig into it. Just
the right amount of sweetness, spiciness and sourness makes this dish a must try.
Sweet endings
Drinks here are usually served in a traditional aluminium cup and the famous drinks
here are the
Thai Iced Tea, Ice Blended Coconut
and
Ice Blended Thai Green Tea
.
For those who crave something sweet, the
Ka Nam Tuay
, a Thai
pandan
dessert, is
the one to try. The salty and sweet flavour combination makes it a stunning dessert.
