Rita Ora: Blasting Through The
Music Scene
What doyouwant people toget fromyourmusic?
I want people to really get that connection of trust and freedom.
It’s okay to be different and the misfit profile is okay. You’re not
always meant to blend in.
Whatmusic didyougrowup listening to?
I grew up listening to music from Iron Maiden, Blondie, The
Runaways, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Madonna and No Doubt. I
was inspired by people that were different.
Arethereanyartistsouttherethatyouarereadytocollaboratewith
that youhaven’t talked about yet?
Yeah, I mean there’s a bunch of people that I’d love to work with
from different genres, rappers to singers. I love Kendrick Lamar
and I love Miley Cyrus and would love to work with them
.
Howdoesmusic complement fashion?
Music and fashion, I think, have never been
closer than they are right now. Fashion is basically
another translation of creativity. Everyone can do
it, whether you’re a writer, painter, musician or
a director. I think there’s a lot of ways to show
creativity so it’s just another form being creative.
Ifyouwereaskedtosurpriseaudiencewithmusic
theywouldn’t expect, whatwouldyouplay?
Probably a reggae album. I love reggae. I like the
culture, I love the music, I like the story-telling. I
like how the songwriting is such a detailed story.
The one thing I can’t do is their accents.
Whatadvicewouldyougivetoaspiringmusicians
who are trying toget a recorddeal?
You don’t need a record deal anymore. It’s true.
I’m sorry to all the labels but I’m just being
honest. I’m very lucky to be on a record label,
don’t get mewrong. And I have an amazing team.
But now you have the internet, and you have
social media, and you have streaming. I think
we are all aware of the time frame we have left
as labels. I think that if you want to get a record
deal, great. But if you don’t, it’s okay, it’s not the
end of the world is what I’m saying. Just don’t
stop making music.
