Malaysian savant boy artist Delwin Cheah has always loved nature andwildlife. Delwin’s
Asperger’ssyndromedoesnotpreventhisexquisiteartisticexpression.Hisfluidsignature
style is black and white and his works feature immaculately detailed drawings of forest
scenes and animalswhich he creates using only pen and paper, without draft sketches
or erasing tools.
Fireflyz
got an exclusive chance to chat to this young boy and his family
at the launch of the t-shirt that Delwin designed forWWF.
No Holding Back
Delwin Cheah is theworld record holder of the “World’s
Youngest Savant Artist To Hold A Solo Art Exhibition”
award, which was awarded by Record Setter, USA. He
is also the Malaysia Book of Records’ Youngest Artist
to “Hold A Solo Visual Art Exhibition”, as well as the
Malaysia Book of Records 2014 “Most Outstanding
Personality (Art Category)” winner. He has also
received letters of appreciation fromboth the President
Of The United States, Barack Obama, and Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II of England for his artwork that had
been presented to them.
Tiger Mad
Delwin’s love for tigers led his father, Lawrence, to
approach WWF about working together on a design
for a t-shirt. WWF jumped at the chance and the t-shirt
was born. I was privileged enough to get a personal
invitation for this event fromLawrence and it was here
that I got tomeet the whole Cheah family. As they were
quite busy with the event, Lawrence promised me that
we would sit down and have a chat once all the photos
had been taken. He briefly introduced me to Delwin,
who agreed to have a picture taken with me.
Let’s Chat
Once things had settled down a bit, and all the pictures
had been taken, the Cheah family and I wandered
over to a nearby cafe where we could have a proper
chat. It was here that I had a proper chance to speak
to wife Erina and daughter Delwina. Once drinks and
ice creams for the kids had been ordered, the adults
got down to the serious business of...chatting like old
friends! Though I had never met this family before,
their warmth shown towards me made me feel like I
had known them for years.
Lawrence and Erina were very animated, full of
good humour and very candid about their journey
with Delwin.
