Raise A Glass To Munich
Oktoberfest
has passed, but that doesn’tmean the city that hosted it
should lay forgotten for another year.
Home of the monks
The capital of Bavaria enjoys fame worldwide thanks to the annual, beer-fuelled
Oktoberfest
that takes place in the city – and throughout the globe – each year in
October, but Munich deserves attention for far more than its drinking pursuits.
As the third city of Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, Munich manages
to combine a small-town charm with impressive historical credentials and a
cultural scene that will leave the art enthusiast weak at the knees.
With a name that translates to as ‘Home of the Monks’, it seems a little
surprising to hear that the city takes its roots in the nearby monastery founded
in 750 BC, with a marketplace that forms the foundation of the city.
Preserved History
The architecture of Munich delivers on the historical
expectations of such a fact, and the ancient
marketplace remains a hub for those looking
for some architecture of the past. Some of the
buildings belonging to the Wittelsbach fam-
ily – who ruled the area in medieval times – are
preserved, as are three of the historic city gates and
Michaelskirche
, the most important Renaissance
church in Germany.

St Ludwig’s Church
