The rebuilder
A half-hour drive from Corbridge will get you to Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian
was a Roman emperor from 117 AD to 138 AD who rebuilt the Pantheon and
constructed the Temple of Venus and Roma. Although it was written,”Hadrian
was the first to build a wall 80 miles long to separate the Romans from the
barbarians”, reasons for the construction of the wall vary, and no recording of
an exact explanation survives. This area is known as Hadrian’s Wall Country
and it stretches across the north of England from the west Cumbrian Roman
coastal defences at Ravenglass, throughWhitehaven,Workington and Maryport
to Bowness-on-Solway, along Hadrian’s Wall through Carlisle to Hexham in
Northumberland and on to Newcastle upon Tyne,Wallsend and South Shields.
The walk along the walking trail was so incredibly calming, just being out
amongst the gorgeous nature and receiving smiles and greetings from other
walkers.
Perfect country house
Set in the heart of some of Northumberland’s most
beautiful countryside, Matfen Hall is a 15 minute
drive from Corbridge. This gorgeous 19th century
country house is the venue of choice for weddings and
other events. This country house has 53 bedrooms,
a spa and an award winning fine dining restaurant,
the Library Restaurant. The Sunday lunches that are
served here are divine and was just what I needed,
traditional English food done well. The whole prop-
erty is stunning and I really enjoyed my walk around
it after lunch. The weather was good, I was full and
everything I saw was a feast for my eyes.
Northumberland has lured me with her siren call
and it will hopefully not be too long before I wing
my way back there again.
market square boasts of artisan book-
shops and bakers. There are independent
clothes and shoe shops for the fashion
conscious, featuring top brands, as well as
beauticians and hairdressers. For foodies,
there are independent cafes, pubs, delis,
grocers, butcher shops and wine-bars.
There are also Italian, Indian, Chinese
and English restaurants. If you are an
arty sort, there are galleries, craft, fabric
and interior design shops, art suppliers
and antique and vintage emporiums to
while away your time at, which I quite
happily did.
