The arrival of the rainy season also means the arrival of pesky mosquitoes. Instead of
going down the chemical route, why not try thesemosquito-repelling plants.
Nature’s Defense
Citronella (Serai wangi)
Citronella
is a perennial, clump-
ing grass which grows to a height
of five to six feet and emits a strong
aroma. The strong smell masks
other scents which may attract
mosquitoes. Although it is used
in many forms, such as scented
candles, torches and citronella
‘scented’ plants, the living plant
is more effective because it has a
stronger smell. Citronella plants are
considered low maintenance, like
most grasses, and they grow best
in full sunlight and well-drained
locations.
Marigolds
Marigolds
are hardy annual
plants which have a distinctive
smell which mosquitoes find
particularly offensive. Marigolds
contain Pyrethrum, a compound
also used in many insect repel-
lents. Although marigolds can be
planted from seed, starter plants are
inexpensive and readily available at
most nurseries. Potted marigolds
can be positioned at any common
mosquito entry points as the smell
may deter mosquitoes from going
past this barrier.
