The baking duo Shantini Sharon and Jivani Jeyasingham
Where does your interest in baking come from?
(SS):
My interest for baking came from having watched my
mother bake ever since I was young. The joy that my mother
had baking for my family and putting a smile on our faces soon
became a joy I wanted to carry on, not only with my family,
but with my customers. Every time we get good feedback from
our customers, I feel a sense of fulfilment.
(JJ):
I was at a market one day and came across a stall selling
baked goodies. I bought a few treats to try and was severely
disappointed with the taste. Since then I began experimenting
with recipes – I couldn’t stop and spent almost every weekend
baking just to enjoy the smell of baked treats. And seeing the
happy faces of people enjoying my treats is also something that
makes my day. I was hooked on that, and that’s what made
me continue baking every weekend.
Howdo youmanage to produce somany cakes in a short
space of time?
(SS):
One of the perks of a partnership is the benefit of having
an extra pair of hands to do everything. Jivani and I are always
able to co-ordinate well and work as a team. If either one of
us is too busy with work or family obligations, we know that
we have each other to fall back on. This compromise and
co-ordination has made it possible for us to take on all the
orders that we have received so far.
Working full time and running the cakemaking business. How
does that work?
(SS):
Definitely the co-ordination that I have with Jivani and
proper time-management skills. But there are times when we
get last minute orders and have to work through half the night
to complete orders, deliver them and get to work the next day!
It’s tough, but knowing that it’s a partnership keeps us going.
