Ground Control To Major Tom
Many of Bowie’s most iconic costumes
were created by Tokyo-based designer
Kansai Yamamoto — who apparently had
no idea who the star was at the time.
When he was 21, Bowie starred in a
black-and-white Lyons Maid ice-cream
commercial. The director was none other
than a young Ridley Scott.
George Underwood, his friend, punched him
in the eye during a fight over a girl when they
were in school, which resulted in Bowie’s
right pupil being permanently dilated.
He weighed just 43 kilogrammes in
1974, and lived on a diet of peppers and
milk during the height of his cocaine
addiction.
David Bowie’s real name is David
Robert Jones. He changed his surname
to Bowie to avoid confusion with Davy
Jones, who was then riding high with
The Monkees.
Unlike their son, Bowie’s parents were failed
entertainers who nearly became penniless while
pursuing their artistic dreams.
Although his career spans many decades,
Bowie has only had two number one hits
in the United States —
Fame,
released in
1975 and
Let’s Dance
, released in 1983.
He was a big fan of Placebo and called
them one of his favorite bands.

apparently, a “horrible incident” with a
cup of tea when he was very young and
has hated the drink ever since.

hit, “Space Oddity,” launched his career
in 1969.
