Sinking Kondor
Not far away from
Rozi
is another artificial
wreck, the Maltese patrol boat,
P29
,
which was originally a Kondor I-Class
minesweeper built in East Germany.
Just before the reunification of Germany,
Boltenhagen
was sold toMalta in 1997 and
renamed
P29
. She was used as a patrol
boat to secure the Maltese coast against
smuggling and border control operations.
Scuttled as a dive site in 2007,
P29
is now
home to gurnards and rays. 50 metres in
length, you will approach the wreck from
its stern. An open hatch is the only thing
visible on the boat before you reach the
command deck now teeming with fish.
Fining along the side towards the bow
you will see a light-machine gunmounted
on the foredeck, unmanned and pointing
in to the big blue. This is one of the signs
that this patrol boat has seen real action.
In 2013,
P29
was listed among the “10
Most Incredible Sunken Ships on Earth”
by Amazing Beautiful World, although
this list has been disputed. What you see
under water is not always what you think
you see or what you are told you see. So
why not go diving in Malta and find the
truth for yourself.
