The idea of a planned city to
house the federal admin-
istration was suggested in
the 1980’s by the then prime
minister Dr Mahathi r bin
Mohamad.
The project began in 1993 and
was finally open for govern-
ment business in 1999.
Planned as a garden city, 38%
of the area is reserved for
green spaces.
The name is significant:
‘pu-
tra’
means ‘prince’ and
‘jaya’
means ‘success’.
Putrajaya is situated 25km
south of Kuala Lumpur.
There are 8 bridges in Pu-
trajaya that stretch across
sections of the 650 hectare
man-made lake.
