Kari Bebek
Bebek
is duck in Indonesian language. What
makes it special is how duck meat is quite
an unconventional choice to make curry.
The rich aroma of the spices and coconut
milk perfectly mask the usually strong smell
of duck meat. Served with plain rice and
vegetable on the side,
Kari Bebek
in Aceh
is to die for.
Gulai Kambing
At a glance,
Gulai Kambing
is very similar
to Negeri Sembilan’s traditional dish of the
same name, but the Acehnese version is
slightly more diluted with the mutton cut
into chunkier pieces. The meat used to make
the dish is so juicy and tender with a little bit
of fat still clinging on to it. As for the spicy
yellow soup, it is packed with flavour from
hot peppers, turmeric and lemongrass. A
very sinful dish, but you are on vacation and
deserve a break from your diet.
Es Timun
The drink actually serves the purpose as
a cooler to balance out the heat and after-
taste of
Gulai Kambing
. Made from shaved
cucumber with crushed ice and sugar syrup,
Es Timun
is a perfect thirst quencher on a hot
day, especially if you are planning to explore
Aceh’s beautiful islands.
Ayam Tangkap
‘Tangkap’ means ‘catch’ in the Indonesian
language. The dish is named as such because
of the way it is served on the plate. The
chicken is marinated with spices and coco-
nut water before it is fried with herbs like
curry leaves, pandan leaves, green chillies
and shallots. The chicken and all the herbs
are then cut into small pieces ready to be served.
To enjoy
Ayam Tangkap
, you have to ‘catch’ the
small pieces of chicken hidden underneath all the
leaves which can be quite tricky to find.
Sanger
There are so many local coffee shop scattered
all over Banda Aceh. All of these coffee shops
served local varieties of coffee prepared Acehnese
style. The coffee is filtered through a cloth lifted
up high over the cup, which is an old tradition in
preparing coffee that has been around since the
Aceh Sultanate era.
Sanger
is coffee with milk
served hot or cold.
Gulai Kambing and Kari Bebek
Combining Chinese and
Indian influences in one
scrumptious dish, Mie
