Gastro Pub Food
The food that is served here surpasses your standard pub
grub. There is quite an eclectic menu which ranges from
light bites and salads to a delicious, spicy wild boar curry.
There were just too many great things to try on the menu,
so a tasting platter with a selection of their better selling
dishes was created for me.
I started with the
Chicken with Cheesy Pasta
. Grilled
chicken breast on a bed of pasta that was covered in a cheesy
sauce. It was creamy and delicious.
Pigs In A Blanket
were
also on the plate. These are pork sausages that are wrapped
in bacon.
The sausages were very tasty and are supplied by a
small, independent supplier. Carpenter tries to support local
suppliers as much as possible. The grilled salmon that was
accompanied by mashed potatoes was a simple dish that
was big on clean, fresh flavours.
The one dish that was difficult to stop eating was the
Wild
Boar Curry
that is served with
chapatis
(an Indian bread).
Perfectly seasoned, spicy, tender chunks of wild boar that
is a flavour explosion in your mouth.
Pork lovers will be ecstatic with the
Porky Platter
, which
is a stunning plate of a pork chop, sausages, roast and pulled
pork, ribs and spicy pork kebabs.
All the bread that is served here is made in-house. Those
on a strict carb free diet can request some of the menu items
to be tweaked to accommodate this. There are three to four
specials on the menu that change on a weekly basis, which
means that the chances are very high of having something
new to try each time you visit. Vegetarian and vegan options
are also available.
The Speak seems to tick all the right boxes, from good
music to great food to televising slightly more obscure sport
like cricket and the Australian Football League. A very relaxed
venue that is unpretentious, you would be hard pressed to
find a better place to spend an evening.
There is live music every Wednesday and Sunday
nights (Sunday sessions start at 6.30pm) and the
sweet sounds of jazz and blues fill the bar. This
place is also very female friendly. It is well lit and
there is a general air of camaraderie and fun. One of
the more unique things that has been introduced is
something called the ‘pressure hour.’ This happens
every Friday between 6pm - 7pm and the one rule
of this challenge is simple. You cannot leave the pub
or use the toilet at any point during this one hour.
Winners are rewarded with free mugs of Tiger beer.
Tuesday nights are quiz nights, a great time to show
off your general knowledge.
The Porky
Platter, for all you
pork lovers!
