Are there any artists that have greatly influenced
your work?
Through social media, I got to know quite a number
of internationally recognised coloured pencils artists
whose works I greatly admire. One of the local artist
that I look up to is Ahmad Zakii Anwar. His work
really blows me away and I hope that one day I will
be able to reach his level of expertise.
What do you think of our local art scene? Is there
anything that we can do to get Malaysians to
appreciate art even more?
The local art scene has recently improved tremen-
dously, with so many talented local artists being
discovered and recognised internationally. I believe
that this has a lot to do with social media. The only
setback is that the locals tend to follow a trend rather
than have a certain connection with the art itself.
Art is very subjective. It speaks to different
people in different ways. People have to learn to
reach deep into their inner-self to understand it.
Children should be encouraged and exposed to art
to open up their young minds. This will help them
see things in different ways.

Could you tell me about the process of creating
your artwork?
I can say that I am a very patient artist, I love doing
extremely detailed pieces and I tend to blend all the
colours using only the colourless blender pencil.
I call my art work ‘painting’ instead of ‘drawing’.
I am still a purist at the moment, have not tried
many mixed media except for the water soluble
coloured pencils. I am still exploring, in terms
of subject. I want to paint everything under the
sky with meticulous details and that shall be my
trademark.
Where are you planning to take your art in the
future?
My plan is to get my art accepted locally and to
educate people that coloured pencils can be on
par with other recognised mediums. This plan
materialised when my artwork caught the attention
of Art Malaysia, and I am extremely honoured to be
included as one of the artists in the Langkawi Art
Biennale 2016, a premier international art event.
This is a huge platform for colour pencil art and is
definitely a breakthrough for this medium.
