I
spent four n i ghts at Simpang
Mengayau wi th my husband in
Apri l 2015, and we simply could
not get enough of the p l ace .
Every even i ng , we wi tnessed
g l o r i ou s s un se ts o f comp l e te l y
different characteristics. We spent our
days galavanting through narrow dirt
roads around the district in our rental .
We stumb l ed upon beaches af ter
beaches hidden at the end of most of
these roads. Some were stowed away
behind little villages. Some of the more
secluded beaches required us to be a
l ittle bit more adventurous.
Estuary dip
One of the highl ights of our trip was
the search for Sikuati Beach. After
having driven around pointlessly for a
while, we had nearly given up hope on
our hunt for this beach. Finally, during
our drive out of Jalan Pantai Sikuati, we
realised that we had to catch a ride on
one of the local fishermen’s boats in
order to get there. For RM100, the tour
started with a ride down the mangrove
swamp behind their vi l lage. Once we
had seen enough mangrove trees, the
fishermen took us to the lovely Sikuati
Beach. As the beach is inaccessible
by foot or by car, we were the only
human presence on the beach at that
time. Sikuati Beach is the point where
the tai l of the r iver meets wi th the
South China Sea. That was definitely
my first experience in taking a dip in
an estuary.
On our final day in Kudat, we pulled
up Google Maps and realised that there
might be another beach which might
be of interest. We decided to head out
and look for Suangpai Beach. Although
the journey was not a difficult one, it
was a rather interesting one. The final
stretch of road which led to the beach
was about a five minute drive. Parts of
it were tarred. Parts of it were gravel .
Parts of it were half completed. The
drive kept going uphill, and we thought
that we were headed towards a cl iff.
Lo and behold! When we reached the
peak of the road and continued driving
downhi l l , we came upon yet another
quiet and rather untouched beach!
We had found Suangpai Beach! Once
again, we found ourselves to be the
only humans in sight.
We were so enamoured of Kudat
that we dec i ded a tr i p there wi th
fami ly and fr iends was in order to
show them the hidden treasures that
are there.
