the places of interest
here are within close proximity to each
other.
Zahir State Mosque
This is one of Kedah’s most distinctive
architectural landmarks and stands as
an elegant example of Malay - Islamic
architecture. This mosque, which was
built in 1912, is one of the oldest mosques
in the country. The designwas inspired by
the vision of the late Sultan Muhammad
Jiwa Zainal Abidin II and the five black
domes represent the five pillars of Islam.
Culturally
The mosque is the venue for the state’s
annual Koran reading competition and is
also the burial site of warriors fromKedah
who died defending the state against the
Siamese in 1821.
Wat Nikrodharam
Alor Setar, over the years, has gone
through periods of Thai rule but its
main Buddhist community is Chinese
in heritage, hence the presence of this
cross-cultural
wat
(Buddhist temple).
Built in 1968, the striking architecture
is typically Thai, with scattered Chinese
Buddhist saints. This Chinese influence is
of great importance to the Chinese donors
who funded this building.
With an amazing display of details and
colours, this amazing
wat
is a place that
should be visited and appreciated.
