the Kwong Sen coffee shop, is among
the top spots which has been serving
homemade versions of the dish. Another
stall within Kwong Sen is also sought-
after for delicious steaming bowl of

Bentong, with her easier pace of life, is a
good place to explore.
packets of six pieces and big packets of 10
pieces, both for under RM10. Come early,
as the aromatic pastries with generous
fillings often sell out quickly at Mrs Mok’s
hawker stall, which is behind the town’s
wet market complex and across
Jalan
Chui Yin
. Nearby, the Cheong Fatt coffee
shop gets crowded in the mornings, with
regulars enjoying superb iced coffees with
a frothy top, irresistible half boiled eggs
and toast spread with margarine.
For theological attractions, visit the
century old Kwong Fook Temple, also
known as
Si Yeh Kong
, occupying a
striking red edifice. You can also partake
in a fortune-telling session by the temple
custodian. It starts with the shaking of a
cylindrical container of sticks inscribed
with numbers. After a stick drops on the
floor, the number on it is matched with a
piece of paper – hung on a yellow board
– which describes your “good fortune”
(or the lack thereof). Handmade paper
replicas of the
hanfu
– traditional dress of
the Han Chinese people – are also sold at
the temple, to raise funds for its upkeep.
The colourful creations are perfect for
visitors to buy as souvenirs.

Cool off at CK Ice Cream House – a Ben-
tong institution known for homemade ice
creams in several different flavours. Try
the piquant durian ice cream – a gener-
ous scoop is a mere RM1.20.
Kampung
Perting
– a short walking distance from
CK – draws visitors to explore its maze
of colourful wooden houses, some of
which have small gardens used to grow
fruits and vegetables. Flowers grow on
the roadsides here – a sight to behold,
indeed – but the streets have no names.
The charming Chinese village settlement,
however, has its own school, police
station and volunteer fire brigade.
The picturesque Chamang Waterfalls,
a 10km drive from Bentong town, is
where you can unwind amidst pristine
rainforests. Enjoy a dip in the cool waters,
but stick to the shallow parts. Avoid the
precarious parts where some visitors
have previously drowned in the strong
currents. There is ample parking at the
entrance of this popular picnic spot,
often teeming with families at weekends,
but it is closed on rainy days. Before
leaving Bentong, you must savour freshly
prepared
yong tau foo
(vegetables stuffed
with fish pastes). A roadside stall, outside
