is no single ethnic group
forming a majority of the
population here. The largest
ethnic groups are the Chinese,
Javanese, Toba-Batak, Minangk-
abau, Mandailing Batak, Karo
Batak, Southern Indians and
Northern Indians, with many more ethnic
minorities thrown into the mix.
This an amazing place to be for lovers of
food as each ethnic group contributes their
mouth-watering dishes that can be found in
every corner of Medan. The choices include
sweet Javanese cuisine to delicious Batak
grilled pork and from savoury Chinese noodles
to spicy Indian curry.
The city has become quite well known for
“food-tourism” and it is no wonder that the
locals are so into the food.
Still showing traces of the Dutch influence,
the city is a study in contrast, with shophouses
and modern malls mingling with huge old
Dutch houses that have been turned into
commercial buildings or government offices.
Tangkahan, an Eco Tourism area, is a short
distance away from the city. This peaceful
jungle resort is home to rehabilitated Sumatran
elephants and a few of their calves.
The elephants and their handlers help
monitor the forest and help to keep it safe and
free of illegal loggers and hunters.
Tourists can ride on these amazing animals,
watch them have a bath or even jump in and
bath with them.
