to Malacca’s renowned Harmony Street.

Fancy tucking into Raub’s popular
fish head curry or chicken curries? Well,
the Ratha Restaurant is ‘It’. The eatery
gets crowded especially at lunchtime. If
you cannot get a seat, then buy Ratha’s
pre-packed ingredients to bring back
home. Nearby, the family-owned Kim
Fah Tea House – managed by several
chatty, friendly ladies – pulls in the
crowds with the signature Portuguese
egg tarts and kaya puffs. Come early,
since the well baked and piquant pas-
tries often sell out quickly. Also recom-
mended: the house-made
chee cheong
fun
(flat rice noodles) served with sweet
or chilli sauce or shrimp paste, and kaya
toast with robust coffee or tea.
The Resthouse on a hill overlooking
the town’s
padang
(field) was disap-
pointing, due to poor renovation that
affected the original British colonial
look. The old photos on the lobby’s
walls, showing the premises’ former
glory, are one of only few saving graces.
Before leaving, drop into Chai Tofu
Factory in a housing area just outside
of town centre. Four generations of the
Chai family have been using traditional
ways to make white bean curds and
tofu pok
(deep-fried curd puffs), daily
to ensure freshness. We bought several
packets of the irresistible
tofu pok
crispy and soft on the inside, and two
bottles of freshly made soy milk for our
drive back home, which went down
very well.
