What sort of people do you get passing
through the Yacht Club?
Over 85%of our guests are fromoverseas.
They come from many countries and I
meet people of various characters.
Tell me about the Regatta.
I have been involved in the Royal
Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR)
since day one. We started planning for
the inaugural regatta in 2002 and the 1st
RLIR was in March 2003. Our aim was
to create a sailing event for Langkawi
then but today, 14 years later, the RLIR
has grown into one of Asia’s leading
yachting event.
Over the past 14 years, we have driven
in more than 450 yachts and over 4,500
sailors to Langkawi to participate in the
regatta. Economically, it has benefited
the island a lot. Participants contribute
to the local economy, as hotels, car
rentals, and restaurants and duty free
shops benefit.
What do you like about living and working
in Langkawi?
Langkawi has its own charm and
beauty that’s yet to be discovered. It is a
Geopark and the first in Southeast Asia.
Langkawi is rich with nature and I always
encourage friends and first time visitors
to visit the Geopark sites. On a personal
side, I lead a high quality and healthy life
(no traffic or toll gates), but one must be
prepared for some sacrifices, especially
if you are from the city.
The RYLC was established in
1996, but only became ‘royal’
in 1999 when HRH Sultan of
Kedah, theRoyal Patronof the
club, conferred the title.
The facility has grown from
having 44 berths initially to
now offering 250 wet berths,
including six spaces for ‘mega
yachts’ of up to 90m long.
When yachts dock at the
Yacht Club they have access
to fuel, electricity, water and
Wifi. There is also a 24-hour
security patrol.
The c l ubhouse has two
restaurants, a convenience
store and a swimming pool.
