Amongst the beautiful attractions of this
island is The Tiger Cave Temple, which is a
Buddhist temple that lies in the northeast of
Krabi. One of the most sacred Buddhist sites
in the province, it is well known for the tiger
paw prints in the cave, tall Buddha statues.
There are 1,237 stairs to climb to reach the
summit. As it is quite a strenuous climb, it
is best to avoid the afternoon sun.
The temple was founded in 1975, when
a Vipassana monk named Jumnean Seela-
settho went to meditate in the cave and
witnessed tigers roaming around. This led
to naming the temple
Wat Tham Suea
(Tiger
Cave Temple). Tiger paw prints were also
discovered on the cave walls and the shape
of the cave resembles a tiger’s paw.
