He was born on Nov
27 , 1940, in Chinatown,
San Franc i sco, USA.
Lee had bad eyes ight .
He was nears ighted
and hi s bad eyes ight
i s one of the reasons
he apprec i ated Wing
Chun’ s contact style
of movement because
he could rely more on
touch than s ight .
In 1962, Lee l anded
15 punches and a ki ck
whi ch knocked out hi s
opponent in a fight that
l asted only 11 seconds .
He a l so studied dance,
winning Hong Kong’ s
cha-cha competi tion in
1958.
Lee’ s ki cks were so
fast that whi le fi lming
for one scene in Enter
the Dragon, they had
to re-fi lm i t in s low
motion (34 frames)
so that i t would not
appear fake.
The man was a big
Muhammad Al i fan
and used to would
watch hi s fights on
fi lm obsess ively,
studying hi s moves . He
had a lways hoped to
fight Al i but that day,
unfortunately, never
mater i a l i sed.
Lee died on July 20,
1973, in Kowloon Tong,
Hong Kong.
Due to hi s bad eye
s ight , Bruce Lee
was one of the fi rst
people to try contact
lenses . They were very
uncomfortable back in
those days however , so
Lee stuck to hi s ‘ coke
bott le’ gl asses instead.
He wore hi s old ‘ coke
bott le’ gl asses whi ch
were held together
by tape, to remind
himsel f of where he
came from. Lee l iked
to stay grounded
and become the best
vers ion of himsel f so
he held on to hi s old
gl asses and wore them
regul ar ly as a reminder
to himsel f that even
though he had found
financ i a l abundance,
he was once poor and
struggl ing.
He was , by a l l accounts ,
a terr ible dr iver . Many
of hi s Amer i can fr iends
who were interviewed
a l l agreed that he was
not the best of dr ivers .
Thi s was probably due
to hi s bad eyes ight .
Hi s ful l name was
Lee Jun-fan.
He was part ly
German. Lee’ s
grandfather was
100% German
and thi s “non-
pure” Chinese
status prevented
hi s acceptance
into many kung fu
school s .
Lee appeared in
hi s fi rst fi lm at the
age of 3 months ,
when he served as
the stand- in for
an Amer i can baby
in the 1941 fi lm,
Golden Gate Gi r l .
Hi s moves were so
fast that he could
snatch a dime of f a
person’ s open pa lm
before they could
c lose i t , and leave a
penny behind.
Bruce Lee was not
interested in school .
Af ter pr imary
school , Lee entered
La Sa l le Col lege, an
Engl i sh-speaking
boys ’ secondary
school in Kowloon,
Hong Kong, where
he of ten got into
trouble. He was
expel led from La
Sa l le for di sruptive
behavior .
