P
early Kee’s passion
for Nyonya cooking
has led her to com-
p i l i ng her rec i pes
into a cookbook with
the intention of sharing her pas-
sion for food and cooking. Kee
was taught from a very young
age to be aware of the food that
she ate. She was constantly told
that she should “eat to l ive” ,
rather than “live to eat”. Food was
to be considered medicine that
healed the body.
Her grandmother was a herbalist
who kept her garden full of tropical
plants and fruits including pandan,
bunga telang, rambutan, langsat,
white guavas and papayas. These
were often used to treat ai lments
such as i nd i gesti on , headaches ,
cramps and asthma.
In those days, her grandparents did
not own a fridge so fresh food was
kept in a meat locker. The four legs of
the safe stood in saucers of water to
prevent ants and other creepy crawlies
from making their way to the food.
This book is her attempt to revisit her
chi ldhood favour i tes and share them
with a wider audience.
