What’s On The Menu?
Amboi Nyonya’s menu consists
of chicken, seafood like prawns
and squid, as well as vegetable and
desserts. It is not a 25-page menu
but there is enough choice for those
who want to experience the taste of
Nyonya culinary for the first time.
The
Chicken Black Pepper
is tempting but it
is
Amboi Nyonya’s Chicken Pong Teh
with Potatoes
that is highly recommended as the main course from
the menu. The Nyonya style stew melts in your mouth,
tender chicken braised to perfection with soy bean paste
and soy sauce.
The potatoes absorb all the flavour from the gravy,
giving them a very distinctive taste. For those who are
not a huge fan of chicken, there are other options like
Prawn Lemak Nenas
(Creamy Pineapple Prawn),
Sotong Buah Keras
(Squid with Candlenuts),
Fish Cili Garam
(Chilli and Salt Fish) and
Itik Tim
(Duck Soup) for them to try from
the menu.
Select ions of vegetables l ike
kangkung
(water spinach), lady
fingers (okra) and eggplant are all
cooked Nyonya-style with
belacan
(shrimp paste) and stir-fried.
Order one of these to complete
your meal together with a plate
of hot steamy rice. Speaking
of hot … for spicy food lovers,
the
Udang Kering Goreng Cili
(Fried Chilli Dried Shrimp) at
the restaurant looks as hot as
its colour isred! Just a tiny bit
with every bite is enough to kill
any cravings for spicy food.
Prawn
Sambal Petai
does the same trick too,
but just beware of its side ingredient.
The strong smell and aftertaste of petai
is not for everyone.
Dessert Time
Nyonya desserts are to die for. The
Ice Kacang
gives
an immediate effect of freshness with shaved ice
sweetened up with jellies and syrup after a whole-
some serving of rice and other flavourful dishes.
The
Cendol
will further cool things down with its
mixture of red beans, palm sugar and of course the
main ingredient- the green starched jelly noodles
with pandan flavouring in ice cold milky coconut
milk.
Before you leave Amboi Nyonya, remember to
snap a photo outside of the restaurant where there
are two old fashioned windows, a row of lanterns and
draped red cloths decorating the entrance. The traditional
Baba Nyonya decor will always remind you to come back
again in the future for your dose of authentic Nyonya cuisine.
