Can you guys introduce yourselves please.
The band comprises of Gerard Singh, myself ( Ridzuan Hamid), Arul Devadawson,
Raymond Chia, and Teoh See Seen. Gerard and I formed the band about six and a
half years ago. The band is a union of two bands. Raymond and Gerard from Big
Game, Arul, Seen and I from Lost Souls. Hence the name The Union.
Do you all have day jobs?
Arul, Seen and I have day jobs. Thankfully they do not interfere with our music
and gigs.
After all this time together, do you still need to spend a lot of time rehearsing?
Actually, yes we do. Rehearsals are pivotal for any band and it is no different for us.
It stops us from being complacent and getting boring or predictable. The rehearsals
keep the excitement at a high level and breaks the monotony. Learning new songs is
a great way to keep the band fresh and
current. And it is just nice to hang out
with the guys.
Why such a specific decade for your
music?
The 80s was a decade where technical
music and melodies and lyrics merged
to form an unforgettable sound and
experience. Many of the bands were often
cutting edge,, trying out new sounds. The
music has, and I firmly believe, will stand
the test of time. Many young musicians
of today refer back to the catalogue of
the 80s for ideas.
The music of the 80s has had amazing
staying power. Why is that?
I think that it was so new, different and
exciting that it still resonates with people
who grew up with that music. It is the
soundtrack to many people’s lives. I
do not think that many of the artists
nowadays will have the same staying
power.
Your thoughts on the music scene in
general in Malaysia?
Malaysia has a vibrant music scene.
I believe it will be a matter of time
before we see Malaysian bands hit the
international scene. The beautiful mix
of cultures gives us a very unique sound.
What has been the highest point for The
Union thus far?
I will let you know when we get there!
What’s next for you guys?
To keep on spreading the beautiful words
and melodies that defined an era. 80s
NOT DEAD!!
