ferent generation like Francis Bacon,
Jean Dubuffet, Andy Warhol and Jean
Michel Basquiat. “All of these artists have
a sense of freedom in their work that I
can relate to. They create bold works that
really move me.”
Having spent time in Malaysia, Froget
observed the local art scene and even
managed to be a part of it, participating
in art events and showing his works at
various galleries in the city. “There is
a great underground, or should I say
unexposed, art scene in Kuala Lumpur
in which I made my first steps. Back then
my work was a fair bit provocative and
surprisingly, was well accepted. I’m not
sure if it had something to do with the
fact that I am a foreigner. Much more
can be done in such a vibrant country. I
believe artists should not underestimate
the changes that art can bring,” says
Froget.
Long Journey
Every art-maker has their own special
ways of creating their works of art. . For
some, it can take months, or even years,
for them to come up with their master-
piece. Forget does not set deadlines on
his creative process. Some of his artwork
has taken just a few hours to complete
while there were more complex pieces
that he had to work on for months.
“When I create an artwork, whether it
is a painting, digital based or mix media,
I always work directly on the surface
without any planning or sketching. I
often start with a simple shape and
composition on the canvas and let the
moment and environment guide me. I
always have music on, paint for five to
ten minutes, go away and come back
with a fresh eye. This back and forth
process helps me to have a better vision
of how the work should be like and what
to alter. It is all about trial and error.
There is absolutely no system or routine
in the way I create, it always evolves as
I perfect my skills,” says Froget.
The journey is still long for a young
artist like Froget, who kick-started his
venture early while in his twenties. He
is well on his way towards greater things
with Bactory, which is his own beautiful
space where he creates and shows his
work permanently in Mauritius. His
artworks are also currently making the
rounds in Europe and are soon to be
showcased in Singapore. “I consider
myself very fortunate to be where I am
today. I hope that my work will continue
to cross borders and hopefully be viewed
by more and more people.”
